Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ)
13 questions about mood and behavior patterns
Important: This is a screening tool, not a diagnostic instrument. A positive screen does not mean you have bipolar disorder. Only a qualified healthcare provider can make a diagnosis. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) - free, confidential, 24/7.
About the MDQ
The Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ) was developed by Dr. Robert M.A. Hirschfeld and colleagues at the University of Texas Medical Branch. It is the most widely used screening tool for bipolar spectrum disorders.
The MDQ screens for Bipolar I, Bipolar II, and Bipolar Spectrum disorders. It has been validated in both clinical and community settings, with a sensitivity of 73% and specificity of 90% in clinical populations.
The questionnaire consists of three parts: 13 yes/no questions about manic/hypomanic symptoms, a question about co-occurrence, and a question about functional impairment.
